How can I tax my car if my insurance is expiring tomorrow?

The insurance renewal on our car coincides with the road tax, which surely can't be unique. Although the DVLA website encourages early renewal and the online checker confirms that the car is insured, it won't let me renew - presumably because the current insurance expires today and it won't look at the new insurance until tomorrow, by which time I'll be illegal. As I'm going into hospital first thing tomorrow I won't be able to try again until Thursday. What a farce.

What you have to do is stagger them. Easiest way is to tax the car for six months, then the tax comes up at an entirely different time of the year. You can get an MoT up to 28 days before it is due and it will still date for a year from the due date.
