A car with lots of leg room

I am looking to spend £6000 - £7000 on a 2007/2008 plate car. I am 6 foot 4 tall and have two children (ages 2 and 5) so interior legroom space a main consideration.

I want a car that is also fairly cheap to run, preferably maximum 1.6 engine size which I guess would limit me to a medium size car?

I would also prefer a hatchback (not keen on estates or MPVs). Also, I have been considering a diesel but note that they can be expensive for certain replacement parts?

I have driven a diesel Seat Leon on holiday which seemed spaciuos inside and have also been considering a Focus or Astra but not sure if these would offer the required interior space?

Very unsure what to do for the best...hope you can help!
