The Sunpass State

Back in April you ran an email about ‘Sunpass Tolls’ on US roads. Having been to Orlando where all the roads surrounding the airport are Toll roads, I obtained a $5 Sunpass from the local supermarket-Publix (a bit like our Sainsbury). On trying to register with Sunpass I was asked for the make and model, colour of the hire car as well as the Tag number (impossible if you try to get the Sunpass before hiring the car).

You also have to give credit card number and authorisation to be charged a minimum of $10 to keep the Sunpass operating. You have to stick it on the windscreen- below the top tinted area- and yes it does work and you do get a discount on Tolls. But a Sunpass can take up to 24 hours to be activated, so you still need a pocket of change. On return to the Airport, you then find it impossible to remove the Sunpass from the windscreen, leaving you liable for its future use. I attempted to contact Sunpass to cancel (you have both a PIN and password).

But guess what? All Payphones at the Airport do not have the capability to contact Sunpass (this number cannot be contacted). And at the time I was there they were having problems with their website. Fortunately I managed to phone a relative in the USA and they switched my call to Sunpass. There is a $20 Sunpass which is transferable between cars and I assume that once again a deposit is required by credit card etc to be able to use it.
