June 2008
New CL 500 4MATIC with permanent all-wheel drive joins line-up from summer 2008. This two-door model is equipped with a 285 kW/388 hp V8 engine, and in addition to 4MATIC it features innovations such as the Intelligent Light System and the preventive occupant protection system PRE-SAFE® as standard.
Mercedes-Benz has further refined all aspects of its all-wheel drive system, and uses the latest-generation system in the CL 500 4MATIC – the same one that has already proved so successful in the S-Class. 4MATIC is permanently active and therefore requires no response time to come to the driver\'s aid in unfavourable weather and driving conditions. As a result, critical situations can be mastered with greater ease.
With a weight of just 70 kilograms, the newly-developed 4MATIC is the lightest drive system of its kind. The combined NEDC fuel consumption of the CL 500 4MATIC is 23.4 mpg, which puts it on a par with the rear-wheel drive CL 500 – a further bonus of the new, highly efficient Mercedes all-wheel drive system. The CL 500 4MATIC requires just 5.4 seconds to accelerate from zero to 62 mph, and reaches an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

With a fuel consumption of 26.9mpg, the new high-performance coupé is also 38 per ent more economical in terms of its fuel consumption than the previous model with naturally aspirated V8 engine.
What to watch out for
Same electrical and electronic problems as S-Class.
27-08-2011:Problem of premature wear of timing chain sprocket for balancer shaft of M272 and M273 petrol engines. Mercedes Star bulletin about this. Big job. Can cost £4,000.
20-03-2015:Mercedes Benz CL Class shown to be 4th least reliable European car more than 3 years old and out of manufacturer warranty in data survey of Warranty Direct policy warranty claims. (Excludes KIAs, Hyundais, Toyotas and others with 7, 5 and 4 year warranties.) Most common faults were axles and suspension.
03-12-2015:Pulsation damper of 43,000 mile 2010 Mercedes CL500 failed and was replaced by Mercedes dealer. Since then suspension has been significantly firmer in both comfort and sport settings, and even in comfort setting the car crashes and bangs over road imperfections where it previously glided. MB dealer has bled and reset the ABC system having agreed that it was too firm. Completed a drain, pressure wash and refill of the ABC system but this has not made any difference. Have said that the ABC pump is leaking slightly but is not ready to replace. No answer.
10-09-2016:Another report of the same problem as 3-12-2015: A fter having accumulators and pulsation damper changed, car now rides very stiff and crashes over even the smallest road imperfections. There are no error codes and the dealership is puzzled as to what to do. Very frustrating.
10-01-2017:Report of ABS pump of 2010 CL500 failing at 38,000 miles. Cost £2,200 to replace.
