What's causing a 'graunching' noise to come from the front of my Volkswagen Golf?

I have a 2003 Volkswagen Golf 1.9 TDi. When I depress the accelerator, I get a kind of intermittent grinding noise coming from the front of the car. The noise stops as soon as I take my foot off the accelerator, and also when the car is going around a corner. As soon as I straighten up again, back it comes, getting faster as I speed up. I'm sure it's just a coincidence that I first noticed this problem whilst leaving my local Volkswagen dealer, but seeing as my faith in them is kinda low right now, I'd value your opinion on what may be the cause.

Possibly the dual mass flywheel.
