Why isn't my Fiat Punto charging its battery?

I have a Mk1 Fiat Punto. I've had no problems with it at all until yesterday, when I was driving along and the battery light came on and is now not charging the battery. I have it on charge at the moment, but what do you think could have suddenly made this happen and how do I go about fixing it?

The alternator has failed.
