Why did 'dry ice' come from my Peugeot 307's air vents?

I have a Peugeot 307 on a 56 plate with climate control. After taking the car for a drive the other day I noticed a problem. The climate control made a noise which sounded like air under pressure rushing through the system, and then I got what appeared to be dry ice fog coming out of the air vents. What is the problem?

Possibly the cabin thermostat. Your dry ice fog was the aircon working on max to lower the temperatures, as you sometimes see in airliners in hot ambient temperatures as they prepare to leave the stand.
