What's causing intermittent power steering failure?
Failure of the electro-mechanical power steering system happens occasionally during low speed manoeuvring when the system is under maximum load. Turn ignition off and back on and the power assistance is restored, until the next time. No creaking or groaning noises, no dashboard warning light, so is it an electrical issue or mechanical? Could the problem lead to something more serious or do we live with it?

The very simple answer is not to impose 'maximum load', particularly by powering the system against the end stops. That basically forces the electric power steering motor to work against an immovable object and is how the motors burn out. Always wind a little bit of lock off when you hit the stops.
