Should I change the tyres on my Astra?

My (2009) Vauxhall Astra 1.6 diesel is currently has 225/50/r17 tyres. I want to change these to 225/45/r17 as they are much cheaper. Is this possible and also what issues will I face?

That will make the rolling circumference of the tyres smaller so your speedo will probably go from 5% optimistic to 10% + optimistic. It will also make the ride a lot harder and make the tyres and rims more susceptible to pothole damage. And you have to disclose the 'modification' to your insurer.
