What's wrong with my Ford Mondeo's air conditioning system?

I have an automatic Ford Mondeo and recently the air conditioning has not been working. It works for about 10 minutes and then throws out air (not hot, but definitely not air conditioned). My local garage have had a look at it, and done the normal tests and filled it up with gas. They say there are no leaks but it still is not operating as it should. Any ideas?

Failed compressor clutch. If I'm right it probably just needs a new compressor clutch for a few hundred quid, not a whole new compressor.

My 51-plate Ford Mondeo's air conditioning seems to be on all the time. Can I disarm it from the engine? It seems to be using a lot of diesel.
