What could I replace my Volkswagen Polo with for use on long distance drives?

I own a Volkswagen Polo estate TDI. While it is admittedly rubbish to drive, with no turn in feel, it has a torquey TDi engine and I am spoilt by its efficiency at around 40-60mpg. I bought it massively under book price at £2300 a few years ago with a couple of cosmetic battle scars. We love to camp and the boot is massive, but my wife would like an easier car to manoeuvre (i.e shorter). I live in London and Bangernomics dictate that spending more than £4000 is a bit crazy, as my old bus picks up scrapes and scratches like you would not believe. Is there anything out there better than my old Polo that can do the open road? The Yaris seems to be a bit short of grunt and everything else is too big/inefficient?

The old SEAT Ibiza 1.9 TDI 90 was a great little car in its day. Yes, a Yaris 1.4D-4D is good too.
