What's the best diesel for £2500?

I have just had my 1998 Volkswagen Golf TDI written off in an accident. As a result, I have £2500 to spend on a replacement. I'm thinking of Audi A3, Volkswagen Golf or Ford Focus. Can you tell me which models are best in this price bracket?

I'm thinking diesel would be best, but am not sure which to go for in terms of reliability, running costs and insurance.

Diesels in this price range can be dodgy, but obviously there's less to no chance of DPF trouble. They have all had problems, but a VAG A3, Leon, Octavia or Golf with the 1.9TDI is probably your best bet. Find the things you need to check in www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar
