Could a loose connection be causing a power steering fault on our 2004 Vauxhall Meriva?

I'm just back from two weeks away without the car to find our 2004 Meriva Enjoy has developed an EPS (Electronic Power Steering) fault. The car was recently dealer-serviced, as always. Might this just be a loose connection? The steering is now too heavy for my wife to use safely. We have had to spend loads on the car recently, and fear another big bill.

It might. Vauxhall blames owners for forcing the steering against the lock stops and burning out the electric PAS motor.
