Can I remap my 2001 Ford Focus to get more power for towing a caravan?

I need to gain an increase in power (about 15-20 per cent) from my 2001 1600cc Focus automatic, which I believe can be achieved with remapping (or re-chipping as I think it is sometime called). I tow a caravan, and the weight ratio gives me good towing stability. The engine runs at normal temperature whilst towing but because it is an auto, I am losing some power through the box. If I gain the extra power will the gearbox and transmission be up to the job?

We'd always recommend avoiding remapping engines, but if you want a second opinion try posting this in the Technical Matters section of the Backroom forum where someone may have experienced a similar problem and can shed some light on a possible solution: honestjohn.co.uk/forum/threads.htm?f=4
