Why is my S-Max so noisy?

I drive a Ford S-Max EcoBoost (2012). I noticed there are plastic valves, about four-inches wide, hinged in a vertical bracket in the motor compartment; in front of the engine itself. From time to time these valves resonate and make a distinctive rattling sound that can be heard inside the car at speeds around 70mph.

I removed most of the valves, but there are one or two that are hard to reach. Can you tell me what these valves are for and what the consequence could be when they are removed?

These are variable vanes efficiently manage the airflow through the engine compartment. Removing them will have made the engine less efficient.
