What's the best small car for under £3000?

I'm looking to buy a car between £2000-3000; efficient and reliable as I plan to keep it till it coughs its last breath. I note you've recommended the Toyota Yaris 1.3, but it's a bit small for my needs. What else would you recommend?

Ford Fiesta 1.25 or 1.4, or Honda Jazz, but you can eventually expect transmission problems with a Jazz whether manual or CVT.
