Are drivers prohibited from driving fellow employees home when unwell by their insurance?

Fellow employees at my friend's place of work have stopped running other employees home when they are unwell, claiming they wouldn't be insured to do this. It seems wrong not to offer assistance to anyone in trouble, for whatever reason. Do you know if this is correct or just scaremongering?

Each of them has to check the terms of their own insurance. If they are not taking any form of payment and if the car is insured for travel to and from place of work then should be okay unless it specifically excludes taking passengers to and from place of work.
