Is the pre-2000 Toyota Carina E diesel reliable?

In the Toyota Avensis pages (1999 to 2001 era) you state "Pre-2000 diesels pointless. Lost its 'smiley face' for 2000 model year." In the Carina E pages you state simply that this 2-litre diesel is 'nothing special'. This is the old 8 valve pre-D4D diesel - but is it reliable (albeit unexciting)?

I'm thinking of buying one - W-plate, 2000, pre D4D, 130,000 miles and apparently trouble free so far. Price £1395. I guess this old type diesel is not as economical as the D4D? Thank you for any advice.

The old 2.0-litre diesel will do about 43mpg, whilst the D-4D will do 47mpg. Both have proven to be relatively trouble-free engines and there shouldn't be too much to worry about.
