Will my friend's new Volvo S40 diesel be susceptible to DPF faults?

A friend is buying a new Volvo S40 Drive diesel. Is this model susceptible to the problems with particulate filters that seem to feature so strongly in your Telegraph column and, if so, what advice should I give him about driving style?

It will be if he drives it only short distances. A diesel with DPF makes no sense for this type of use as it will not get anywhere near the EC test economy figures anyway. It will only make sense if he regularly drives it distances at 2000rpm or more.
