How should I store summer tyres whilst winter tyres are fitted?

I changed my tyres to winter ones and am keeping the summer tyres in my garage. I have been told that the rubber may start cracking and they will not last as long as they're not being used. Is this correct, and if so, how should I store them?

No. Not true. It is actually UV rays that cause the cracking to the sidewalls so tyres should be stored off the ground and out of the light.
