My insurance company is disputing a payout on my Mitsubishi FTO - what should I do?

I bought a Mitsubishi FTO last year, it's an N-reg. Another driver went into the back of me. Now my FTO has been written off by the insurance saying its worth £1300, which seemed OK. Then I get told that they did not know it was an import and that I may get no money for my car at all. I'm very confused, as first of all they took my money and insured it - I gave them the reg number and told them it was an import. And I thought all FTOs were imports - am I right? I think the insurance company is messing me around.

Not all FTOs were imports - some were brought into the UK by the official Mitsubishi importer, the Colt Car Company. If you told your insurance company that it was an import, and you declared it, then they should pay out. If this is the case, you may want to take your case to The Financial Ombudsman: www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/
