Is it safe to drive a car with collapsed manfold flaps?

I own a 2002 Saab 9-3 and the garage has told me that the manifold flaps have collapsed. It will cost more than £1000 to fix, but this seems like a lot of money for such an old car. Can I risk it and carry on driving?

It's your decision, but be warned that if the swirl flaps break off and are ingested by the engine then the engine will be destroyed.
