Some hidden costs associated with hire vans.

I had to hire a van from a well-known rental company. The assistant asked me for both parts of my driving licence and, because I did not have the paper counterpart with me, had to make a call to DVLA, which cost me £6. While returning, the van had a slow puncture and I was unable to get the spare off the underside. I called the service department of Enterprise and they said that it would cost £120 to get an AA man to come and change the tyre. Fortunately I was only about two miles from the drop off, so my cheapest option was to purchase a foot pump, inflate the tyre and get it back to the depot. Just two of the hidden costs of hiring a van.

UK licences are a brain dead stupid system. The photocards should always have had a chip to contain the information on the bit of paper, but the anti-identity card brigade got their way, which is why we're all supposed to carry two driving licences. That was lousy service from Enterprise over the slow puncture, but you could have sued for the return of the AA fee on the grounds that the vehicle you hired was "not of satisfactory quality".
