High driving position, low running costs

Still driving a Yaris D4D 52 plate. My husband still would like something bigger. I like a higher driving position and low running costs, and ultra reliable.... We are going to test drive a 2008 Prius. I would also like to try the Kia Soul (there is a used Shaker nearby), Kia Venga and Hyundai IX20. I reckon the Prius will have the lowest running costs and the Soul the nicest drive position and the IX20 the most expensive running costs.

We do a lot of short runs so newer diesel not good. I like what I have read about the Sandero Stepway but I think there would be a long wait until one in our budget (or one at all!) Also like what I have read about Ford BMax, but out of budget. We always value your opinion! Avid weekly readers....

IX20 or Venga 1.6 diesel will be as cheap to run as the Soul diesel and actually have a better driving position with better visibility. But Souls are weirdly cute.

What car is best for me? I like a high driving position, boot space for camping, good fuel economy, ideally some bodywork protection/trims, good all-round driving visibility, cheap to insure/tax.
