Sticking valve gear - Toyota Corolla

I have a 2006 Toyota Corolla 1.6 with a noisy valve. Toyota tech says a batch of these were produced, and he said that the valve stem mushrooms due to being incorrectly hardened both he and a mechanic spotted it straight away - it cost £1200 to fix.

Was there ever a recall for this problem mine has 49,000 on the clock sounds like a diesel
