Trouble starting a Volvo V50 diesel

Volvo V50 2-litre diesel has a fuel pump that is more of a suction pump mounted on the engine after the fuel filter. If air gets into this line then the pump ends up trying to pump air and does nothing.

This happens after the car has been standing overnight - once its started then its no problem all day. I have fitted a hand priming rubber ball pump just before the filter to assist when it will not start in the morning - but I still have the problem. How can I find out where the air is entering the fuel line between the tank and the fuel pump?

Not sure that you have an air leak, it could well be that you have a problem with the leak off from the injectors.

There is normally a leak off valve fitted. However, if it fails then the fuel will not hold its pressure at the injectors (ie overnight) so that when you come to start there is no pressure at the injectors.

Would suggest that you have a leak off test carried out on the injectors.
