Premature brake wear on a Polo

I purchased a Volkswagen Polo in December 2010. The car was serviced in December 2011 with no concerns. The car is now making a noise when brakes applied. VW advise that disc's are pitted and part worn and require replacement to get rid of the noise.

How can discs fail at 14 months old and approx 15K miles? Volkswagen insist it's my driving.

Common problem on the Polo. Have had other complaints of exactly the same thing.
