Why do so many of your readers fill their cars with the wrong fuel?

What is wrong with people who misfuel their cars? Do they not understand there are things you just do not do? I find it difficult to believe that such people actually are allowed on the roads. Please allay my fears and tell me that these emails are made up just to encourage responses such as mine.

According to the AA, a colossal number of people misfuel by filling with petrol rather than diesel and there are firms whose whole business is based on correcting their mistakes. Happily it is now impossible to misfuel any new Ford diesel, and Citroen is also now fitting anti-misfuelling filler necks to its C4 diesel range.
