Winter tyres or a Jimny?

My wife is about to start a new job that involves a 36 mile round commute mostly on very narrow country lanes. She is very concerned over the winter driving due to icy conditions - very few of the roads are gritted around us. Are we better off getting a set of winter tyres for her '07 Golf 1.9 tdi sport or replacing the car with a narrow 4x4 such as a Suzuki Jimny.

Reviews suggest the Jimny is exceptional in the winter but no where near the Golfs quality. Our preference would be to keep the Golf with the winter tyres but will they be up to the job?

Winter tyres better. Michelin Alpins or Pirelli SottoZeros.
