Good, economical small car

My daughter is starting a nursing degree in September.

She is 25 and has a clean licence. She may need to drive up to 80 miles as a round trip on several days of the week. Is there a small car you might recommend (or several) which we could consider as a cheap to insure, economical, daily hack?
