No idea of what car for daily commute of 100 miles. 1-2k budget

I currently drive an X-reg Fiesta Finesse and have a commute around around a 100 miles a day (motorway).

Its currently costing me in excess of £300 per month just in fuel. My fiesta has almost 100,000 miles on the clock and i'm looking to change it because everything has started to go wrong with it (quotes to fix come to well over double its value) and its not very economical.

I was looking at getting a diesel because everyone keeps telling me that's what I need.

Can you recommend something in the £1,000 to £2,000 bracket that will be more economical then my Fiesta?

I would like something of a similar size that will be noticeably cheaper to run then my current car if that's possible.

You do need a diesel. But I cannot guarantee that anything you buy in the £1k - £2k price bracket will be any good. But if you find a SEAT Ibiza 1.9TDI 90, that's worth a bid. They were quick and 55mpg cars 10years ago.
