My Volkswagen 1.5 TSI rattles in two-cylinder mode, what is causing this?

I purchased a 2019 model Volkswagen Golf 1.5 TSI earlier this month and it quickly developed an annoying, though mild, rattle when in two cylinder mode. As soon as the engine flips back to running on all cylinders the noise stops and it also stops if I take my foot off the throttle and then cuts in again when two-cylinder mode returns.

But so far nobody seems to know what this could be and the dealer from whom I bought it can't give me a service department appointment until August despite the fact that I only bought it a couple of weeks ago. Wondering if you have any ideas?

We have heard from several owners of various Volkswagens fitted with the ACT technology who have experienced the same thing, although there does not appear to be an obvious solution.

We would suggest checking the actuator rod at the back of the engine which can work loose and cause the rattling noise to occur in two-cylinder mode as well as the gearbox actuator cables which can rattle against the exhaust heat shield. The issue may be occurring because in two-cylinder mode the engine is running less smoothly and causing components to vibrate when they do not in four-cylinder mode.
