Does a service plan start from the date of first registration or the date of sale?

My friend bought a Citroen C3 in September with 10 miles on the clock. Now, at 1200 miles, the dealer has told her its due for a service. On top of that, they're saying that her 3-year service plan started in March (when the car was first registered), not in September when she purchased it. Surely they are wrong on both counts as the service plan couldn't possibly have started before she bought it.

Generally speaking, a car should be serviced every 12 months or 12,000 miles (whichever comes first). Failure to adhere to the service schedule will ultimately invalidate the manufacturer's warranty, so it's very important to keep to Citroen's recommended schedule. The dealer is correct about the service plan (it starts from the date of registration) but I would argue that this important piece of information should have been explained at the point of sale. Your friend should make a complaint to the dealership. I would expect them to refund the cost of the first service.
