Mayor bumped off

I think that the speed bumps mentioned by you correspondent from Congelton must have been on a road with a speed restriction, I guess the expensive bumps were installed because we motorists were not abiding by the speed limit. My understanding is that the bumps are specially designed to not damage any car travelling within the speed limit. Maybe the writer would prefer no speed bumps but speed cameras instead. Speed cameras are only a ‘Stealth Tax’ so long as we motorists break the law. This from one who has been ‘done’ twice in the last 2 years, I now pay more attention to road signs.

Even the TRRL tests showed that speed humps damaged vehicles. In particular, London taxis. The fact is, speed cushions are destroying the inner shoulders and sidewalls of tyres and humps and cushions are fracturing car springs. If proper statistics were available for the causes of death crashes, I estimate around 500 deaths a year could be attributed to blowouts and suspension failure directly attributable to damage from speed humps and cushions. They are probably killing far more people than they could ever be claimed to have saved. Meanwhile councillors, council officials and their mates have been raking it in from the taxpayer from installing them at £500 a speed cushion. On 22nd May, Boris Johnson was nearly wiped out on his bicycle when the back door of a truck unlatched on a speed hump, hit a car, and dragged it across the road.
