Sinking in the rain

I drove through some floodwater in my Peugeot 406 HDI 110 that was deeper than I expected. Several hundred yards up the road the engine started losing power. Home was only a few hundred yards away so I limped home. The engine runs but if you press down on the accelerator it belches out steamy paraffin smelling smoke and loses power. I have left the engine running in the vain hope it will dry out and be ok. You advice would be much appreciated.

If the engine is running it has probably not hydraulicked. I'd get a diesel injection specialist to check it out. Something you could do yourself is dismantle the air cleaner and trunking and make sure no water is left in there. If the air filter is sodden wet, chuck it away and buy another.
