I have a manual 2009 BMW118dSE. From the date of purchase I have noticed that when I slow or change down, as when approaching a turning or roundabout, the engine thrust can still be felt. On occasions I find that the engine continues to drive the car, even up a gentle incline when my foot is off the accelerator and the clutch pedals. I am assured by my dealer that this is a result of "torque" and that they have had similar comments or complaints from others. I have driven countless cars and never previously encountered this feature. I also note that the fuel consumption is about 20% below the claimed figures. Again I am used to inflated claims and appreciate the variables. But I wonder whether the two features could be related.

This reads as if you are driving in too high a gear for the circumstances. The engine will probably run at a minimum 800rpm and, if this corresponds to more than the speed you want, you need to use a lower gear. For example, if the car is geared at 20mph per 1,000rpm in 2nd and 25mph per 1,000rpm in 3rd, minimum speed in 2nd is 16mph and minimum speed in 3rd is 20mph.
