Achieving closure

I have a 2003/53 Fiat Punto and after filling up the water for my wipers I can't get the bonnet to close properly. There is approximately a 1-inch gap and I'm really worried it's going to fly up, as it's really windy. The release lever feels loose as well? Any ideas on how to close it properly? I have tried WD40 on the catch

Lubricate the catch. If there is 1-inch gap, the secondary catch is working, but not the main catch. Have a fiddle with a screwdriver. It may have clicked over closed with the bonnet open. (S.L. responded, “thanks that worked a treat!”)
