Vauxhall Omega Auto Gearbox

What would create a sudden loss of oil from area at rear of gearbox indicated at 60 mph by whitish smoke at back of car? All fluids checked OK except gearoil no dip stick car drives perfect, outside temp at that time was -5 plus windchill factor.

Temporarily failed oil seal or more likely the transmission breather.
