Kia Pro_cee'd (2013 – 2018) Review

Kia Pro_cee'd (2013 – 2018) At A Glance

4/5
Honest John Overall Rating
The Kia Pro_cee’d is a sporty, three-door version of the Kia Cee’d hatch, and there is no denying it looks good. But not all versions are as exciting to drive as the dynamic styling suggests.

+Great looks. Well equipped. GT model feels fun. 1.6-litre diesel engine is swift and frugal.

-Long doors aren’t ideal in narrow spaces. Only the GT is exciting to drive. Steering is disappointing.

Insurance Groups are between 8–30
On average it achieves 76% of the official MPG figure

Kia was not the first to offer a coupe-like take on the three-door version of its family hatch. However, the Kia Pro_cee'd was more convincing in the style stakes than many others, even if only the 201PS GT model had the go to match the show. Even then, it makes a sound alternative to the SEAT Leon SC and even the Volkswagen Scirocco. Read on for our full Kia Pro_cee’d review.

The Kia Pro_cee’d avoided being just a three-door version of the Kia Cee’d hatch by virtue of its more coupe-like roofline.

It’s an undeniably handsome car that adds a sporting tone to the company’s mid-size model, with the performance to back it up in GT guise.

Opting for the Kia Pro_cee’d as a used car over the Kia Cee’d means losing some of the five-door hatchback’s practicality, although access to the back seats is reasonable thanks to the long doors.

You can fit a couple of adults in there, although they may feel hemmed in due to the high window line.

There’s no arguing about the space, quality and amount of standard equipment for those in the front of the Kia Pro_cee’d, though.

All models come with air-conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth, rear parking sensors and steering wheel controls for the stereo.

You can choose from S, SE, SE Tech and SR7 trim levels, and there are alloy wheels for every Kia Pro_cee’d model to emphasise its sporty flavour.

In the 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel models, economy and emissions are on a par with most of its key rivals, but don’t expect much in the way of excitement.

For more verve, you need to look to the Kia Pro_cee’d GT, which has a 201PS turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine.

While it’s almost as powerful as a Volkswagen Golf GTI, the Kia is very much a warm hatch rather than a hot one, as illustrated by 0-62mph in 7.7 seconds.

Still, it’s good to drive, well kitted out and cheaper to buy than more extreme models.

My car is tax exempt but I was clamped and charged for being untaxed - is there anything I can do?

"I own a 2014 Kia Pro_cee'd Eco which is exempt from car tax. On 24 November 2016 my car was clamped for being untaxed and I had to pay £230 (£130 later reimbursed) to have it removed. I wrote to the DVLA who told me that despite it being exempt it still needs to be 'taxed' and I have no recourse. To add insult to injury I now have to pay £30 to avoid court action. So-called exemption has cost me £130 - is there anything I can do?"
No. You have to re-tax the car every year even though there is no charge for the tax. You will have received a notice from the DVLA to that effect.

Can you recommend a fun, stylish car for under £20,000?

"I wrote off my 9-year-old BMW 330i and am trying to decide what to replace it with. My husband is fixated on Mercedes-Benzs or BMWs and so I have considered a CLK. Part of me feels that I don't need something quite as flash (having got it out of my system), but I do want style and reliability. I even thought about a Cinquecento. Whatever I buy it will probably be about two years old. I have a budget of up to about £20,000. Any suggestions?"
A MINI convertible or a Fiat 500C TwinAir or Abarth 500C will be good fun. £20,000 also buys a Mazda MX-5 2.0i Sport, either a Roadster or Roadster Sport with an electric folding hard top. A Citroen DS3 1.6THP 156 cabrio is a decent drive (soft-top now available). So is a Peugeot 208GTI, and the stunning looking KIA Pro Cee’d GT at £19,995 with a 7-year warranty. But a new Fiesta ST is cheaper at £16,995 and generally reckoned to be the best of the bunch.

What do you think of the Renault Laguna Coupe?

"I drive a 1999 Toyota Celica, which I love and have owned for eight years with no major problems at all. I feel however, that I would like something a little more up-to-date. I still want a coupe or a similar style car, and have been looking without too much success, as I still want a car with the versatility of split rear seats and a little space in the back for an occasional passenger. I have seen a Renault Laguna Coupe and consulted your review. Is this car (albeit a couple of years old) a suitable replacement, or have you any other suggestions? I feel a petrol engine would be better than a diesel as I tend to make short journeys and I would prefer a manual gearbox."
The short-lived (in the UK) Laguna Coupe is a nice car and the rear wheel steer system on some models works well. At least one reader has one and improved the ride comfort by fitting smaller wheels with deeper profile tyres. I guess you'll be going for the 2.0-litre turbo. Alternatives include one of the last Celicas (year 2000), a Volkswagen Scirocco, a Volvo C30, a Hyundai Veloster, a Renault Megane coupe, a BMW 1 Series or 3 Series coupe, or a KIA pro_cee'd.

Which car to replace my Audi TT?

"I have owned a current shape Audi TT 2.0-litre turbo since new and it is now five years old. The car fits me very well but I am thinking now of replacing it. I need the load carrying capability and occasional rear seats. Is there anything else I should consider before buying another TT of the same shape a year before the new shape comes out? I have seen previews of the new shape and don't like it."
Toyota GT86, Subaru BRZ, Volkswagen Scirocco, KIA pro_cee’d GT, Hyundai Veloster Turbo.
