Depending on the car model and type of spark plug, between every 20,000 - 30,000 miles. Like many parts of your car, spark plugs are subject to wear and tear (especially the electrode).

Rough engine idling is the most common sign of spark plug wear. But you can also experience poor fuel economy, lumpy power delivery and even a misfire.
