  • BMW 520 - Replacement for my BMW E39 520i SE 15 Jun 2013 (Forum)
My daily commute is around 90 miles so I'm guessing a diesel needs to be considered now as I'm currently driving a C - Max and getting 38 mpg (which is a pleasant change after my BMW) Needs / Wants - Auto, Comfy relaxed drive with oomph when needed, stylish interior with plenty of toys Intial thoughts - BMW 520d but...
  • Car recommendation 10 Oct 2011 (Forum)
But we need something bigger and with a smoother ride. So I'm looking for a recommendation for a car with the following requirements: Max Budget £8k Reliable Economical Smooth Ride Spacious + Practical (We are a young family of 3, but I see us having more kids) To give a heads up I've looked at Nissan Qashqai's, X-Trail and RAV 4.
  • British built auto estates - any out there? 15 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Although I might consider an X-Type if I could get a cheap deal I suppose, it is British built I presume. Max budget around 15k and will consider new or pre-reg/nearly new (up to a year old). Anyone got any suggestions? I'm particularly wondering if the outgoing Vectra C is built on these shores......even though I've never thought I'd ever buy a Vauxhall.
  • KIA Sorento SUV (2003 - 2009) - In Shock! 22 Nov 2008 (Forum)
It would seem other than keeping the Sorento the other option would be to negotiate a cash deal without PX, maybe save, say £1,500 to £2000 in the current climate which would bring the value of mine down to £3000 max to fall in line with the original offer and then bide my time on a private sale. Its gotta be worth a bit more come what may. Am I thinking logically on this one? Of course logic would say just keep the Sorento but if I really want to change.
  • Peugeot Partner Combi (2001 - 2004) - '55 Partner van, Diesel throttle cable adjustment 19 Feb 2008 (Forum)
I replaced the 'hairclip', released the cable, and colleague released the accelerator pedal. The result is now the revs max out at over 5K instead of about 4200, and it has enough acceleration to pull out into unrestricted roads with more confidence. I reckon it's now got about twice as much throttle movement. Is this the correct adjustment procedure, and out of curiosity, can anyone tell me what the other bowden cable going to the pump below the throttle cable is for?
  • Trading in vs. selling privately 14 Jul 2007 (Forum)
It's been great, but as I have an 8 month old baby it's time to get something with a back seat. I fancy a Clio 172 or a Peugot 306 Gti and only want to spend £3-4K max. A couple of garages have said that my car is only worth £500 as trade in (a bit lower than I was expecting), but while mechanically good, the paint is fading (it's red) and there's some minor bodywork blemishes.
  • Pathetic Passat gets the Push 3 Jun 2007 (Forum)
But what do I replace it with? I need something that matches its carrying capacity, economy, comfort. I've thought about a C-Max, a Mondeo estate, even a Picasso. I reckon I might get £2.5k part ex for the Passat and can stump up another £6k or so. Suggestions and advice (esp from HJ himself if he has a mo) would be welcome.
  • I Have A Question - Volume 185 30 May 2007 (Forum)
I have been on various websites, chez-nous etc but can anyone recommend either a villa type place, or even a static caravan maybe within 2-3 hours max of the Channel Tunnel? Preferably one wyou have stayed at before, say less than £500 for the week? Also re the tunnel, they seem to do some very good prices if you are travelling midweek out of normal hours eg £40 odd quid I think between midnight and 6am.
  • Help pick a small van 20 Dec 2006 (Forum)
I have heard a lot of horror stories from the trade people over reliability. Also been told to look at Transit Connect, Citroen Berlingo & the new shape VW Caddy. Max cost of £9K either new or nearly new ( dont worry about VAT, thats claimed back ) & its a cash sale, must be a diesel, must have ABS, deadlocks would be a good plus, alarm would be nice & also so would aircon.
  • Intermittent loss of PAS - Mondeo mk2 6 Nov 2006 (Forum)
The weight when this happens is identical to trying to steer the car without the engine running - i.e. I can move the wheel, but it's hard work. Fluid level is just under MAX (where it has been since I bought the car). Fluid looks a little murky though. No sign of leaks and no puddles or stains on the drive or on the inside of the undertray. PAS belt looks in good nick and doesn't appear to be squealing or slipping.
  • Fight and Flight 11 Aug 2006 (Forum)
I never do it in an aggressive way I have to say, but simply to make them aware of my presence when they have moved into the lane that I am in and 'cut me up'. I'm always doing 70 max and moving into lane 1/2 when it's clear. The response from the driver is either a hand gesture, foul language and stamping on the brakes causing me to take aversive action, or the driver just floors it to escape the situation at well above the speed limit.
  • 1996 Vauxhall Calibra 2.0 16v 2 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Hi All, I have just purcahsed a Calibra and have a few Q's: 1, the Oil level low light is on in the dash warning light display. Have checked the oil level and was fine and topped up to max level but the light is still on? however looking under the car there does appear to be a very slight leak. 2, the front brake pad indicator light always comes on in the dash warning lights. Again there seems to be plenty of depth left on the front pads. 3,Resonating noise coming from the passanger door area during acceleration ( i think it MIGHT be the window or window mechanism/runners??)
  • Suzuki Ignis and 98Ron Fuel 18 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Well, back again on the fuel octane issue. I recently bought a rather good Suzuki Ignis Sport (RRP £10K, from dealers for around £7.5k, bought a 5 week...
  • Stephen Bayley on the Golf GTI 22 Mar 2005 (Forum)
The problem is that Stephen and his wife have just finished test driving a Bentley Continental, no doubt living life to the max and drinking coffee whilst zooming along the autobahn at 150 mph without so much as a ripple. Unfortunately, the Bentley is back with its owners and they have come back down to earth with a VW Golf GTI road test.
  • Sofa so good! 13 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Why? Well, it's too big to fit inside the car and I want it somewhere else. It weighs less than 75kg (max recommended weight) and is narrower and shorter than the car. Trying to imagine it I think it would be just about 1m tall and looking a bit silly. Fuel consumption would suffer and maybe rocking it (with acceleration and braking) on 2 bars at 700mm spacing might cause damage to the roof rails and fixings.
  • Astra 2003 SXI Oil problem 17 Jun 2004 (Forum)
I have done 1200 miles in it since i have bought it and i have had to top the oil up 3 times during this time. When i say top it up i mean top it up from the min level on the dip stick to the max(approx) level on the dip stick. I have never had a car that i need to do this to. Vauxhall are saying that this is normal for a car with low mileage and will settle down at around 9000 miles (I have asked them twice with the same response on both occasions).
  • Audi 80 TdI Turbo problem? 31 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Under acceleration in 1st and 2nd, it will rev freely to about 5000 rpm (redlined at 5200), of course like any turbo delivering the max power at about 2500-3000. However in 3rd and 4th the power stops at 4100 - just suddenly as if there is some kind of regulator or cut out. Actually quite nasty as the first time it happened I was blatting up a hill on a motorway passing some slower vehicles and suddenly, no more power!
  • where's my oil going 24 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Is it normal for this type of engine to consume oil? Is the normal level for oil half way between max and min? (ie. has the engine burnt off the oil as there was too much in there, returning it too it's current state?) If what i have mentioned above is not normal does anyone have ideas as too what the problem could be?

I bought a Ford Focus Zetec 1.0 EcoBoost but was not supplied with a manual (I was told by the dealership that they no longer provided them). Checking...
