  • Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - 2003 - 1.4 petrol using a lot of oil. 4 Dec 2007 (Forum)
For the past year or so the oil light comes on about every 1000-2000 miles. Every time I check the oil, it has gone down to low, so I am filling it back up to the max point. I am using the correct oil as I checked with VW garage, and even 2 months after a oil change from the VW service, the light came on. I have taken the car to two seperate garages asking if there is a leak, however nothing can be found, but it is costing me loads in oil (about £20 a bottle!)
  • Free High Street Parking - Hens Teeth 1 Dec 2007 (Forum)
When I say busy, I mean it has bars, coffee bars, butchers, grocers, fish mongers, hairdressers and posh frock shops. Funny thing is, it works, despite the presence of a very busy main line rail station There is a max 2hr limit with no return within 1 hour. You can ALWAYS find a space within 30 or 40 yards of where you need to be. No one seems to take the Michael, no one double parks, it is all very civilised, and I have only seen one warden in the area in a month.
  • Auction Advice 20 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Will £4k get me an ex-fleet with around 80k on the clock on a face lift model? I've heard horror stories about auctions but my mate has just bought an ex-fleet C-Max without any problems. Will £4k get me something half decent and avoid the 'dodgy motor' trap as I am not a car expert!? Many thanks in advance for any help. Cheers.

  • Living with a turbo: advice please 26 May 2006 (Forum)
I assume that three fundamental things apply equally to turbos fitted to diesels and petrol engines: * In the words of one MB expert, "anyone with a turbo engine should never consider using a non-synthetic oil". * Frequent oil changes are essential (i.e. 5000 miles max with fully synthetic; oh, alright, 7500 miles then). * Letting the engine idle for at least 30 seconds before switching off is equally essential, to allow the turbo to spin down from tens of thousands of RPM under lubricated power (cf. allow 20 seconds before repowering a computer).
  • Speedo Inaccuracies & Service intervals 12 Aug 2005 (Forum)
The Speedometer in my car shows 10% faster than actual road speed when compared to the portable GPS. So 60mph on dial is actually 56mph, 70 is 63. This...
  • VW Golf MK3 Auto Transmission 28 May 2005 (Forum)
I have read several manuals and their appears to be no general consensus on how to measure the AFT dipstick level on the 096 transmission box. When cold the level should be at the bottom of the dipstick and when warm between the max/min marks; conversely mine appears to be the complete opposite. On runs fluid appears to be dispended from the breather holes on the top of the gearbox housing. Since there are no plugs to keep the fluid in.

  • mondeo overheating, help! 2 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Stopped immediately and checked under bonnet; header tank is full almost up to cap, no signs of leak. After leaving for a few minutes then gently realising presure, water level drops back to 'max' line. Tonight I managed to get home keeping an eye on temp gauge, but motor was really cooking when I stopped and water boiling (?) in system. Header tank cap was realising pressure. System was pressure checked OK the last time it occurred.

I have just been looking up the road tests on the 1600E. With 88 BHP variously 11.8, 11.7, 12.4 0-60 mph time Max speed 95, 96.3, 97 MPH The spec said 13.1 and 98MPH and 25.1 MPG Motor said ...only a moderate thirst for petrol. Our overall MPG 23.1 being pretty fair. The car came with an optional servo and optional seat belts Basic cost £799 which became £1020 19s 11d .

Thankfully I was fortunate to buy my turbo diesel from new, but I would`nt touch one second hand without documentary evidence of oil changes at 8k max.!!!
  • Rover 216 Overheating 30 Oct 2002 (Forum)
I'm worried that I might cause irrepairable/expensive damage to the engine. I topped up the oil and coolant last night. My symptoms are: Needle started creeping up to max on motorway at around 70mph but no hot air was coming through the heaters. I slowed to about 50 and got off the motorway at the next junction and the needle dropped to about normal. Opening the bonnet revealed a fizzing noise and a small amount of steam coming from behind the engine.
  • Xantia heater slow to warm up 26 Nov 2001 (Forum)
Whilst on the subject, the automatic climate system seems to act irrationally, e.g. if I increase the required temperature, the fan speed reduces (I would have expected it to increase) and if I set the temperature to max., the fan speed just about dies. I could understand this if the car was stone cold, with a large difference between the ambient temperature in the car and the temperature requested, presumably because the fan would be blowing harder but with colder air; but this seems to occur even when the car has reached correct operating temperature.
