Toyota Yaris - upgrade/change to bigger/newer car 21 Feb 2024 (Forum)
I am thinking about possibly replacing her for something newer, bigger, with a few more mod cons- I would like something very reliable, economical and preferably an automatic. I would like to spend around £10,000 max but could push slightly higher for a car that I will have for a long time. I appreciate the suggestions -
Coupe for under £35k 6 Jun 2022 (Forum)
Requirements for a similarly comfortable, fast and entertaining premium car (ideally a coupe) that can accommodate 4. I do only 4k miles per year with infrequent long distance driving with a max budget of £35k. I've discounted the 997 as examples within my budget are likely to require high maintenance and luggage space on longer trips is unusable. I'm considering an M4 (2019 MY competition spec) but I'm concerned that future environmental taxes will price me off the road within 2-3 years. -
Jeep Cherokee towing 25 Oct 2020 (Forum)
I have a Jeep Cherokee sport, 2.4l petrol, 2002. I towed with it recently (1500kg max) and had to stop at a junction, it was a slight incline to pull out and as I accelerated it didn't feel like it wanted to pull the trailer away, obviously we did get going but it made me feel a bit queezy imagining being stuck on the junction! -
How do I get out of a parking ticket? 10 Aug 2020 (Ask HJ)
I went to the shop and parked in a 20 minute space but the queue was long. I was issued a parking ticket for being 32 mins. How can I avoid this fine? -
Volkswagen Golf - Are 3 door cars bigger in the front? 2 Aug 2019 (Forum)
Hi, I'm looking to buy my first car(previously drove my mom's Honda crv) I'm a big and tall guy so I like my space, I noticed that some of the smaller cars I have trouble getting in and out of (inside room is fine just getting in and out) This will be my first car so not looking to spend too much, was thinking a focus hatchback 2007-2010 or golf again 2007 to 2010, and then a octavia or passat 2007 to 2010, I've noticed that 3 door cars seem bigger but just wondering if the front seat is bigger/more roomy, I'm opened to any car suggestions you may have for cars, 1.6 petrol max (insurance purposes) I was also looking at the citroen c4, 3 door version, it looks quite roomy in the front, Anyways, welcoming all feedback and suggestions, thanks :) -
2009 Peugeot 207 petrol - Coolant temperature problem 25 Feb 2019 (Forum)
Imagine I drove about 35 kilometer on highway and it just arrived to 50 C at the end of the journey. The temperature increased literally 1 C each minute or so. I turned on the blowers to max and hottest and it was quite hot. I mean, I closed the air outlet with my hand and I could resist only 5 seconds. The coolant level is OK. What would be the issue here? How can I possibly verify if the coolant temperature is actually correct? -
Removing clutch without consent. 2 Nov 2017 (Forum)
While waiting for that appinmtent the clutch seemed to have largly corrected itself. From slipping all the time, badly, to slipping very slightly every 2 hours of driving max. So I called the garage to ask if I should cancel the appinment, they said bring it anyway and we will take a look. So I did, then I got a call to say the clutch had been removed and that it was tottally gone. -

Peugeot 207 1.6Hdi (90) - Once more i like the look but have heard bad things about reliability, despite my 206 being fine for me. For those wondering, my budget is 3500-4000 max and im looking at doing about 12k a year mileage. Any advice on any of these cars would be really appreciated. Cheers, Mat -
Small Automatic with 5 or 6 gears? 21 Feb 2014 (Forum)
She wants a minimum engine size of a 1.4 with a 1.6 (same as her Clio) the ideal. Budget is £7k max. So far I've looked at Corsa, 207, C3, Ibiza, i20, Note, Punto, Polo and they all appear to be 4 speed on years up to about 60 plates. The only ones I can find are the 1.3 VVTi Yaris (6) and the Suzuki Swift (5). -
Any - Short Car Trip to Germany - Advice Needed 29 Dec 2013 (Forum)
My lad and I are planning a short (3 to 4 days max) road trip to Germany next year. Will want to take in some of the sights in / around Berlin etc. I'm OK with booking the Euro Star train but unsure how I go about booking accommodation for the trip as I don't know exactly where I will be on each day. -
Vauxhall Vectra C - buying a >3 litre car... scouring autotrader 10 Dec 2013 (Forum)
Current Volvo is a bit too asthmatic for towing the caravan, so my cunning plan has been to do an autotrader search for a petrol engined car, 3.0 to 3.9 litre, up to 10 years old, max price £5000. As you will be aware the site narrows the range of manufacturers for you. Mercedes - overpaying for the badge. Ditto BMW. Audis all seem to be quattros, don't think I need it really. -
Toyota Avensis 52 1.8 VVTi - HC emissions 22 Sep 2013 (Forum)
I am wondering whether this dramatic increase in HC emissions is a consequence of the engine burning oil, and whether I should expect further rise in HC emissions which might then lead to the car failing to pass MOT (max HC 200). CO emissions also seem to have gone up, currently at 0.18 natural, 0.14 fast with the maximum levels being 0.3 and 0.2 respectively. Not sure if CO emissions are in any way related to HC emissions. -
any - exec/saloon 21 Aug 2012 (Forum)
I am just written off my 57 407 2.0l diesel. Car has lasted 90k, was a good motorway traveller, doing 20k a year. Looking at max 6k. Read so much differences of opinions over Diesel vs petrol (recent which study http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/buying-and-selling/2012-07/which-confirms-hidden-costs-of-running-diesel-cars/ ) Thought about 2003-2009 model toyota avansis Diesel, the 2.0l model seems to have good words spoken about it. -
Nissan Almera (2000 - 2006) - 03 1.5 Timing Chain replacement 22 Jan 2012 (Forum)
There's £200 difference between a genuine Nissan part and non-genuine one. Am I making a mistake by using non-genuine timing chain kit? The car is only worth 2k or 2.5k max. Thanks for your advice. P.s Will never buy a Nissan car again let alone an Almera. -

£3k budget - low insurance estate cars? 17 May 2011 (Forum)
I'm attracted to the idea of getting another diesel, but not sure I put enough miles in to make it worthwhile - driving is mostly 5 mile weeks doing the supermarket run, with one or two longer motorway trips a month.. All told about 4-5k miles a year max. Living in darkest Peckham, insurance is a problem - cheapest price this year came in at >650 with 3 years NCB on a car I paid 1500 quid for.. With that in mind, what kind of small-mid family estate should I be looking at in the £2-3k range? -
Cheap Used Car 3 Feb 2010 (Forum)
Been looking at the usual, Fiesta, Escorts, Polos etc and I have 3 main questions if anyone could help out?: Trader or private? Any cars you would recommend or avoid? What would be the max mileage you would recommend buying a car at? Cheers in advance for any assistance you can offer as there's so much out there that i'm stumped and really can't afford to buy a dodgy one that will cost me fortunes! -
Vauxhall Astra F (1991 - 1998) - 96 1.6 Temperature not right 10 Nov 2009 (Forum)
t=78863 ), there's still something not right, as the temperature either stays very very low (needle only a little off the bottom of the dial, and it takes an age for even this to happen) or occassionally shoots up to the max (seems to be when idling or going very slowly) only to settle back to very low when you get going again. I initially though the temp was low because the radiator fan switch was broke and the fan was on all the time, but tested it with the fan unplugged and it still hardly flickered, and now have a new fan switch. -
New runabout required! 22 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Also going to test drive a Suzuki Swift and a Corsa tomorrow. I will probably try to get a used example, as I don't do a lot of miles per year (max 5000) so it'd be a waste of money to get a really expensive car, unless it was pleasurable to drive - the Jazz was exactly that, whereas the Mazda 2 felt quite underpowered. Any suggestions on a car that I haven't thought about?
