  • high mileage cars 22 Dec 2005 (Forum)
    Has anyone got a car that has done maybe 150,000 200,000 miles still with the engine? How many miles will an engine do if its serviced regularly. I get the oil changed every 6000 miles, and do diesels last longer than petrol engined cars? {Puntuation added to make easier reading. DD}
  • yes my 306td again 6 Oct 2005 (Forum)
firstly thanks to every1 that has helped so far in getting my 306 working again, the car now runs and drives like new with no sign of the white smoke issues i was having or poor starting, only thing now is that when i floor it and the turbo cuts in there is a visible puff of blue smoke, any ideas on the cause of this? the oil is coming up for change so thinking of getting some engine flush to put through it first anybody think of any other cause? chris
  • Cheap diesel car for less than £1000 23 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I was considering buying a cheap diesel. I would prefer something easy to work on as I\'ll be changing the oil amongst other stuff myself. My mk3 1.3 fiesta is a delight to work on \'cos there\'s stacks of space under the bonnet. Just really wanted some opinions from a few DIYers. Are the fiesta diesels chain driven by the way ?
  • Fiesta 1.1 emulsifying up 5 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Since my daughter does 20 miles a day between two towns , I would not consider this a car-killing journey. Is it worthwhile to consider changing the thermostat to one that opens at a hotter temp ? Running on a different oil ? All help appreciated.

  • opel vectra c - Failed MOT on high lambda 4 Apr 2016 (Forum)
Hi everyone looking for abit of help my car failed it's MOT on emissions, on a high lambda reading to be exact, the car had a fault code when tested p0170 the MOT results are CO 0.00% HC 8PPM on both idle and high idle and lambda is 1.16 the car recently had done thermostat and CTS ,air filter, oil and filter spark plugs, a genuine 02 Sensor and a genuine Maf, and also some suspension work ( tie rods and anti roll bar links) since changing the MAF the car feels more responsive and the code has gone away I changed this after the last MOT test I was just wondering could this be why I failed the MOT before I rebook it

  • Peugeot 306 - Peugeot 306 1.9td smoking under load. 8 Apr 2012 (Forum)
It's hard to tell what colour it is through the rear window but if ever there is a car behind me with their lights on I can normally drench them in smoke! I think it's black smoke... Service wise other than coming up for an oil change everything is new, belts, filters, everything! It started though after a recent cambelt change. The old belt was very slack and the new one (Inc rollers) made a very noticeable difference in performance, a slight one in mpg and the engine even sounds more like a diesel!
  • Vauxhall Astra G Petrol - Advice Appreciated - Vauxhall Astra I.6 Envoy - 52 11 Dec 2011 (Forum)
The service records are a bit patchy so to be safe we are having a full service and getting the cam belt changed. Any advice on what else we should get checked/changed?  I have heard that there can be issues with the engines running cool on the 8v. There were signs of an oil leak when we inspected the car and the dealer said it needed a new head gasket and offered to replace it .
  • Current highest mileage with NO engine repair 3 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Our old 'school-run' VW Passat Est 2.0 GL did 242,000 with no attention to the engine apart from regular oil and filter changes every 10,000 and a few sets of spark plugs. Only the cambelt tensioner pulley was replaced [by me] - but not even the cambelt. Oh, and the HT leads once. No coolant change, apart from an early water pump failure at around 60,000.

  • Just bought a Polo 8 Dec 2006 (Forum)
Its very clean inside out so it suggests the car has been looked after very well. Even though the car was serviced by VW at 64k miles they never changed the timing belt on it. I just want to know why and when it should had been changed? Also car has got light creamy coloured stuff on the oil filler cap. I cleaned it and after starting up the car for few minutes it comes back on.
  • Golf V5 mk4 vibration and juddering 12 Oct 2006 (Forum)
I took it to a garage and it kicked up a number of faults - throttle body short to ground, mixture problems, and ecu defect. I was told to change the throttle body and that would cure it all. After changing the throttle body, the fault was not rectified so i took it to another garage to get the codes cleared, and now the ecu reads no codes however.. the car is still juddering and shaking a lot while stationary and also while taking off.
  • How long should we keep the Focus? 19 Feb 2006 (Forum)
She'll do about 10k pa, mostly short (10 miles) to very short (3 miles) trips. It gets used most days. I'll change the oil myself every 5k, and get it serviced to schedule, prob at the dealer, who is not expensive. When should we change it? 2 years, three, or run it into the ground? On a side point, we live at the end of a muddy track which can be very wet in winter, so it's often parked up quite wet underneath.

Should I buy the special to type top hose or is there another hose I can free to fill the engine and also bleed the air out. What is the normal servicing periodicity for this car, oil will be changed at 6K and cam belt mileage/time? TIA Peter
  • Diesel Power 13 May 2002 (Forum)
In fact, the average recorded level, on my engine, is now 1.36. ( Out of interest, is this 1.36 "particles" per million ?) I now have a noticeable reduction in power. The air filter has been changed recently, the injectors have been cleaned and I change the engine oil at every 3000 miles. Could anyone kindly advise if the loss of power is a penalty which I must pay for the low emission reading or, is there some adjustments which I can make, without jeopardising the emission figure, to give me a bit more power ?
  • Vauxhall Vectra B facelift (1999 - 2002) - 00 1.6 ECU light on- starts "missing"at const foot 6 May 2009 (Forum)
s better at high revs and higher speeds. The Code retrieved is P0400 EGR valve redistribution. The EGR Valve has been changed and also the EXHAUST Manifold has been changed (£300.00) as it & Cat both were having a crack. I have got the car serviced (oil and air filter changed) by paying £150.00. Don?t know what else I should do .

What else it at the top of the neglect tree while *seeming* to escape unscathed. Unlike for example the opposite, such as engine oil and filters. Regards
