clattery Golf mk2 23 Nov 2002 (Forum)
I've got an 89f mk2 Golf GTi with 106k miles which for 2 years has been totally reliable. It's due a service & cam belt change, but has recently started to sound "clattery", as if the camshaft was worn. Thing is it only does it intermittently, especially when cold or idling - tho' not always. The oil level is fine & it doesn't burn or use any. -
JAG XJS AUTO GEARBOX PROBLEM 16 Jan 2002 (Forum)
GOT A 93 XJS WITH 31,00O MILES ON THE CLOCK. PROBLEM IS WHEN I SET OFF IN THE MORNING GEARS CHANGE UP 1ST, 2ND, 3RD, OK - THEN IT GOES TO 2ND AND RARELY GOES UP AGAIN, 5 MILES TO WORK, PARK UP. AFTERNOON START UP DRIVES PERFECT THRU THE GEARS NO PROBLEMS. ANY IDEAS? GEARBOX OIL IS CLEAR AS A CLEAR THING, FILTERS PERFECT. -
Noisy Tappets 9 Nov 2001 (Forum)
The noise disappears when the temperature needle is at 12 o'clock, but it seems to take far too long to quieten down. The car is a 1.3 Polo that has had 5000 mile/6 month semi-synth oil changes for the last 50k. I don't mind living with it if it's harmless, but will a persistently noisy tappet do any damage? Nissan X-Trail (2001 - 2007) - 04 2.2dci oil leak 17 Sep 2008 (Forum)
I have an oil leak underneath the engine i would say it leaks about half a dozen drops or something like that each night on my drive its in line with the oil sump plug or there abouts its been like it for months but i only noticed when the patch built up on my drive.I took it to my local garage who checked the vehicle over & decided to replace various gaskets as it was not coming from the sump plug nor the filter they didn'nt really know where but assumed the changing of gaskets may solve the problem me not knowing an awful lot about what goes on underneath the bonnet agreed to this. -
SEAT Alhambra 1.9 2001 - Time to Change 13 Sep 2017 (Forum)
Mileage covered is now only around 8 - 10K per annum l have a budget of between 6 - 8K (perhaps a little more for the right vehicle) Personally, l would like an X5 3 litre diesal, though would not pay £520 road tax after a 55 plate & l know running costs are high. l'm also aware of the swirl flaps issue & the debate over changing gear box oil. The other alternative l like is the Honda CR-V 2.2, though again l have heard of problems with gear change/flywheels etc. Lastly, can l make a case for an estate? -

56 plate Astra Life 1.6 petrol auto - Autobox problem. 19 Jul 2014 (Forum)
Daughter in law's car with 84k miles, was nice runner serviced at correct interval's but Stacy doesn't know if gearbox oil has ever been changed. She had driven to shops, reversed out OK and then into drive. Made some noises and seemed unwilling to move. Recovery driver said probably engine coolant into oil circuit. Car driven minimal distance since and will go into 2nd or 4th but not 3rd. -
Citroen C5 - Citroen C5 Hdi Anti Pollution Fault 29 Jan 2014 (Forum)
(Thank god) It had an anti pollution fault light pop up and engine management light come on. I was doing a service anyway so I change oil, oil filter, air filter and I noticed the maf had disintegrated. So I have replaced that with one off ebay. I cleared the engine management light and had no faults. Drove it for 240 miles and it atill seems a bit sluggish. -

Nissan Almera 2000-2002 Petrol 1.5L - Flat spot @ 1500 rpm 12 Oct 2010 (Forum)
This is felt more on 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th gears. It is more pronounced during the start of the jouney. The Timing chain was changed recently It did run out of petrol recently There is an oil leak after the engine stops on the left hand side of the engine from the head. (The mechanic feels it needs a head gasket replacement for stopping the oil leak) An engine management check returned a "Faulty Crank Sensor" but the mechanic feels it could not be the crank sensor but may be the timing chain etc. -

Hi everyone, My 205 XL AUTO on a H reg. (1991) is running very rich... ??? I'm going to give it a new air, oil and fuel filter, oil change, and new spark plugs but that's about the extent of my knowledge and capability lol when it comes to my pug's running. Suzuki Wagon R+ (2000 - 2007) - 01 1.3 what is causing my poor fuel economy? 14 Apr 2009 (Forum)
The handbook says I should get between 36(urban) and 55(extra-urban) MPG but the most I have managed on a longish run at 65mph is 38mpg, and in mixed driving I get around 34mpg. Owners on suzuki forum report 45mpg is easily achievable. I've changed the plugs, oil, air filter and oil filters to no avail- and the tyre pressures are spot on. The car has only done 45,000 miles and has been serviced each year from new, any ideas what the problem could be? -
Vauxhall Astra G Petrol (1998 - 2004) - '02 1.6 Piston ringsvalve seals. Garage rip off??? 23 Feb 2008 (Forum)
During the work the garage did something to the head so had to replace it (at their own expense). Since then (and after them doing an oil change) the car used up all the oil on a 500 mile trip and has blue smoke coming from the exhaust on start up and in traffic. Apart from being extremely embarrassing I would like to know if the garage have caused permanent damage to my car. -
Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - What common-rail diesel can you rely on? 4 Dec 2007 (Forum)
No major problems (apart from gearbox out to lubricate splines on input shaft - as clutch not always disengaging) I usually buy a 6-9 month old car shortly after my existing vehicle gets its first MoT, so I'm looking at changing mid-2008. What should I buy? Friend has a 2005 Honda Accord diesel - certainly not been trouble free - just had a new stability module - also put off by label in door jamb saying 'Check oil daily' - but hers isn't using oil. -
Living with a turbo: advice please 26 May 2006 (Forum)
I assume that three fundamental things apply equally to turbos fitted to diesels and petrol engines: * In the words of one MB expert, "anyone with a turbo engine should never consider using a non-synthetic oil". * Frequent oil changes are essential (i.e. 5000 miles max with fully synthetic; oh, alright, 7500 miles then). * Letting the engine idle for at least 30 seconds before switching off is equally essential, to allow the turbo to spin down from tens of thousands of RPM under lubricated power (cf. allow 20 seconds before repowering a computer). -
New car warranties 29 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I had a look at the various government web sites, and nowhere does it mention VAT registration, merely a garage, but nothing about DIY. So what's to stop me buying everything from the dealer, like oil, filters etc. and doing it myself? They also said if something happens like an engine blow up, it's up to the dealer to decide the cause. Since when did dealers become experts in things like oil degradation and metalurgy, in order to determine why a main bearing has picked up, for instance? -
95 1.8 Diesel Fiesta bad starting 18 Mar 2005 (Forum)
It turns over fine and will go after about 15-20 secs emmitting a cloud of smoke when it fires up. The car runs fine when warm, no smoke, burns no oil, no noisier than it should be and still returns correct MPG. The new glowplugs have'nt really made any difference. The old old ones did'nt look that bad at all. For reference so far this year the car has had oil and filter change, new air and fuel filter and has 87000 miles on the clock. -

Is it required? 8 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Perusal of this site over the past few weeks has revealed a healthy interest in prolonging engine life by use of a particular brand of oil, careful running in, additives, changing oil more frequently than the manufacturers recommendations etc. I have run 3 cars over 100,000 miles with just standard servicing, and a good friend of mine runs a taxi business where his self employed drivers run their standard family saloons with astronomical mileages on the clock.
