VW Passat TDI first service problem 16 Sep 2006 (Forum)
I called the garage up and they said '..........possibly a glitch, bring it in and we'll reset it' Hmmm......if they do that, and don't change the oil at the same time, will the car still monitor the existing oil properly or will it be confused and let the car run with nackered oil later on? Is it possible for me to detemine whether or not they did or didn't reset the service flag at 9900 miles? -
Dodgy Astra 23 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Well, it turns out that they were broken (oops), but we took the car into our local independent who changed them at substantially less than the 200 pounds each quoted by the Vaux. dealer. While it was in, the garage found that the oil cooler was leaking (we knew it had an oil leak soon after buying it, but just topped it up until it could be fitted into the garage), and replaced that too with our permission. -
53 Vectra SXI Servicing 22 Dec 2004 (Forum)
Anyway, they have refilled the sump with semi synth 10w40 and I queried this with them as it doesn't seem to mention this oil grade in the handbook. The service manager I spoke to said that they use this oil as "in the past" they have had warranty problems with customers topping up with incorrect grade oil.He also advised me that this oil would be perfectly ok to use for up to 1 year or 20k whichever is first. -
Instant high revs on start up = damage? 12 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I assume that the crank, journals, and other bearings would still have been nice and oily, but in the experience of those who know, is this brutal treatment likely to have damaged anything that will manifest in many miles time? V70 2.4 petrol turbo. 10k miles. No oil change or service performed yet. TVM -
2016 VW Touran 2.0 TDI 150 - Lack of Use - Delaying a time interval service? 18 Apr 2020 (Forum)
Due to COVID-19 and travel restrictions meaning I will not now repatriate back to the UK until October, it will now not be used until just before it is technically due it's next service - Obviously all the components that other than engine oil will be hardly used, so I guess I'm naturally inquisitive as to whether a change in engine oil is actually needed, or whether I can push the entire inspection / service back six months until the Spring. -

Hello, I have just changed the oil SAE 5 W 30, oil filter EFL 600, new sump plug and air filter on my Ford Focus 1.6 auto 2003. I used to get my spares from Halfords but this year used the Ford dealer as the prices were similar. -
Mitsubishi Carisma (1995 - 2004) - 2004 1.9 DI-D Plastic engine undertray removal. 27 Aug 2008 (Forum)
I would like to give the car an oil and filter change. Bought all the necassary parts and thought it would be a doddle. Also bear in mind the last time i decided to do a service on a car it was fourteen years ago on a 1986 Fiesta. -
Ford Escort (1993 - 2000) - 1998 1.8td excessive fuel consumption 22 Aug 2008 (Forum)
hi i was wondering if any one can help , my 98 td escort is drinking the diesel its doing at last count about 18 mpg , also there is a lack of turbo boost, when i used to put my foot down in second the turbo would kick in at about 2.5 - 3 rpm , but now when i put my foot down all i get is plooms of black smoke in my rear view , could anyone recommend any parts that may need changing, its had new oil, oil filter glow plugs, diesel filter , air filter but its still the same , my friend has the exact same car , his accelerator is more responsive than mine , could it be a timing issue? -
Citroen Xsara (1997 - 2004) - 01 2.0hdi What to check before a remap? 6 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Its recently had a new clutch on it and soon to have its alternator belt done too, along with new brakes (pads and discs) and new suspension coils + shock absorbers in the last 6 months... oh and new tires all round! I believe the cambelt is the original, and its done 61k. Oil done in the last 5k, and most my driving is motorway based. Air filters and such were done with the oil change. Recently flied through its MOT... mind you, had a bit done to it beforehand! Have already paid the extra for the insurance, so covered as soon as I get remapped. -
Volvo S70/V70 (1996 - 2000) - yr 1997 2.5 turbo - coolant system pressurising 9 Mar 2008 (Forum)
I have a 1997 r reg volvo v70 xc the coolant system pressurises after a few miles of driving, and it over heated, i took it to the garage where they said the head gasket had gone, there is no oil in the water nor any water in the oil, they said they didnt know why it was pressurising but the head gasket was gone. Is this a fair description of why it wouldbe over heating? since they quoted me £1000 to change the gasket. -
VX Omega 2.5 V6 Headgasket probs 26 Oct 2003 (Forum)
hey I have a 2.5 v6 CDX omega on a M 1995. It started showing signs of headgasket failure (oil in water, not oil cooler). I took the heads off to discover both gaskets were blown. I renewed the gaskets, cambelt( inc tentioners) and had the heads skimmed. i put it all back together and found it didnt run. -
renault clio dti erratic acceleration 6 Aug 2003 (Forum)
This most occurs accelerating in 4th abd 5th between 50 to 70 mph. Also - and it may be me - the turbo isn\'t whistling as much as it use to. It\'s had belts changed at 44k, but at the full service at 36k they filled it with 10/30 oil instead of 10/40. Surely oil can\'t make this big difference?! And I\'m due to drive to cornwall from yorkshire on friday - should I be worried?? -
Vauxhall Corsa C - Vauxhall Corsa, 'Yellow spanner' light fault 26 Nov 2010 (Forum)

Bio Fuel - Jeep Cherokee 2.8 diesel 6 Jul 2007 (Forum)
So I had a look a found it wouldn't start due to low fuel pressure traced the fault to injector not holding fuel and leaking it all into the cylinder. Replace the injector and it started no problem but was still noisy so turn it off and check the oil found it was all sludge tried to drain the oil but no oil came out it was all just sludge. Suspected this was just because the injector had been leaking and contaminated the oil by going past the rings. -
Peugeot Bipper Tepee 1.4 HDI SA 2010 - Peugeot Bipper Tepee transmission fault 28 May 2025 (Forum)
Does anyone have any idea what the issue could be, seen something similar on TV about an Audi and its tiptronic gearbox, they changed the gearbox oil and cleaned the filter which cured the problem. We have not changed any of the oils (gearbox or engine) in the last 4 years. Any suggestions would be much appreciated, cheers Mark. -
Vauxhall Zafira B - Vauxhall Zafira co2 emissions fail 5 Sep 2017 (Forum)
I recently put it in for it's MOT and it's failed on two minor things and then co2 emissions. I tried additive and a good thrashing and put it for retest it still failed. So I tried an oil change and oil filter gave it a run again and it still failed. So put it for diagnostics which the garage said came back clear so they were sure it was the cat. So i had a new cat put in and downpipe at the garages recommendation but had my brother in law do it independently who is a qualified mechanic. -
Vauxhall Vectra B - Vectra diesel diagnosing injector seals 18 Mar 2013 (Forum)
The issue now is that I'm not sure if it is 100% fixed. I don't want to be away from home and find it won't start. When I Changed the leak off pipes, there was diesel in the lines, but also oil. I read somewhere that oil in the pipes suggests the injector seals, but I would like to get some more opinions before I attempt that job. -
Ford Focus 02 plate - Another Emissions test fail question 6 Oct 2011 (Forum)
Can anyone offer any advice car has failed its MOT on high CO emissions The test print out reads 1st Fast Idle Test CO Fail 0.67% 0.30 max HC pass 79ppm 200Max Lambda Pass 1.01 0.97 -1.03 2nd FAst Idle test CO fail 0.63% HC pass 33ppm Lambda pass 1.01 Natural Idle test CO fail 0.88% 0.5 Max Prior to this test the engine management light had been on for about 2 months after failing test 1st time around (with similar values) it was taken to a diagnostic auto electrician who reset the management light and reported a fault of misfire on 4. He saw no problems with the sensors and suggested a retest . Plugs changed, air and oil filter changed, new oil put through and taken for adecent run (8 or so miles) but driven normally as in up through the gears then taken for todays retest and FAIL!! (values as above) Car regularly does fair bit of miles on medium jouiornetys eg work days between 17 - 65 miles each way and weekends tend to be short journeys of less than a couple of miles. -
SEAT Ibiza III (2002 - 2008) - Trouble with dealer servicing a car after purchase 14 Aug 2007 (Forum)
I then queried the service book which stated that a service was due at 19,000 miles, (bought the car on 15k and reached this after 4 months) and they stated that the service was not due for a year or 10,000 miles. The upshot of this is that they haven't changed the oil for 16,000 miles. I have argued the point to the them about when we bought the car we assumed fully serviced meant changing the oil. Then when the service light came on and we went back asked is this correct and they reset it? -
Farewell faithful VW 13 Apr 2007 (Forum)
On a long test drive today ...it ran smooth as silk, incorporating furniture removal for a friend...no point in wasting diesel, and over the years returned a consistent 30/35 mpg with absolutely no oil needed between changes. I sold it for a very reasonable £1850 (inc new front tryes& exhaust) and what on earth can replace such reliable motoring for that sort of money? Bet the Defender doesn't last that long trouble free....
