  • Volvo V50 2.0l diesel - volvo v50 brake caliper tool. 20 Oct 2011 (Forum)
Hi. The rear brake caliper piston requires winding back into the cylinder to change the pads. Questions are precisely what tool is required, who sells it, and does the handbrake automatically self adjust? Finally is it safe to put a spot of engine oil to seep down the handbrake pivot in the calliper or are there plastic bushes in there?
  • Ford Focus - Rounded sump nut 21 Jun 2011 (Forum)
Ford main dealers were the last ones to change the oil on my Focus 1.6 Ghia '55 reg and in doing so they overtightened the sump nut/bolt and left it rounded. I used Bolt Grip (made by Irwin) to release it and Halfords has a replacement 'Sump Nut and Washer Kit' HSP608 at £2.99.

  • What exactly do you expect for your service fee? 27 Jul 2009 (Forum)
If you take a car to a non-franchised garage, and ask for a 12,000 mile service for a specified vehicle, for which you are quoted £x, what do you expect? 1. Oil/filters etc. to be included in the price? 2. The service to be according to the manufacturer's book requirements, or to be a random selection of fluid/part changes according to the whim of the garage?

I would welcome thoughts on this engine. My wifes car is a 1993 Citroen ZX n/a 1.9 on 234k......it still returns 55/65 mpg with regular oil changes......when is this going to break down? Thoughts please! It will probably break down as soon as I fix some poor "spelling", Rob
  • Re-setting service indicators, DIY 20 Jan 2007 (Forum)
With relevance to DIY in the future,( after warranty) is there any way around this and are all modern cars the same? It seems a deterent to doing what amounts to little more than oil and filter changes only to have to pay to have an indicator reset. Modern times? Any thoughts?

  • Audi variable servicing 11 Dec 2000 (Forum)
HJ I wondered what your respected view was on the new Audi variable service intervals? I just bought an S3 and don't feel comfortable about waiting 2 years or 20k until the first oil change. I average only 6-7k a year. Am I a luddite or is this the way of modern technology? Colin PS Great site, singing your praises over on the Audi and import newsgroups.
  • Vauxhall Meriva - Shocking MPG 29 Aug 2021 (Forum)
Apart from a slight squeaking noise while idling - which the mechanic said is just the new tensioner belt he fitted needing tightening a bit, a code comes up when starting the engine asking for an oil change which was done last year as part of the full winter service. The mechanic said it comes up automatically at 50000 miles and I checked the oil level which is fine and the oil is still straw coloured.
  • 2011 CHEVROLET CAPTIVA 2.0 VCDI AUTOMATIC - Engine won't start after breakdown with DPF fault 24 Jun 2020 (Forum)
After a few minutes the engine started self-revving and making a horrible clacking sound. I pulled over and stopped, called AA. He said the oil level was way up and showed me oil in the inlet manifold hose, probably also in intercooler and everywhere else it shouldn't be. Advised not to try restarting due to risk of overrun.Garage drained and changed the oil, tried to start it.

This happened on a Saturday it went into Pug on the Monday and they had it for 10-12 days. I picked the car up and they told me they had changed seals and had the engine bay apart.
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7 v8 wj 1999 - automatic gearbox banging into gear 25 Mar 2010 (Forum)
got a problem on my grand cherokee when selecting 1st or reverse it bangs into gear then as you drive it again it bangs into 2/3/4th gear with a bit of a thump, got an error code displayed of P 0700, and the check engine light is on,took it too Mtb chester jeep dealer for diagnosis,  who informed me oil was low although i tended to disagree as i do check the oils frequently so they topped up the oil 2 litres ? they said and cleared the fault code drove it down the road i mean only 1/2 a mile it was still thumping into gear and the same error code re appeared took it straight back, mechanic cleared fault code and reprogrammed gearbox with factory settings, and said it would take the gearbox a while to "learn" / reprogram itself drove it 1/2 mile engine light came on again and the same error code P 0700 mechanic said try changing the speed sensors on the gearbox first before doing anything else, ........ anyone any  ideas please
  • Omega 2.5 V6 breather/oil leak 20 Nov 2002 (Forum)
Many thanks to Stuart and Crombster for their help, Decided to bite the bullit and change the cam cover seals - they are expensive for a bit of rubber. Glad I did though because there was quite a lot of oil in the spark plug trench between the cams particularly on the drivers side bank.
  • Mazda 6 SL 2008+ - Mazda 6 Handbook - Should be amended/revised 16 Mar 2010 (Forum)
Many of us have had this happen with no DPF warning light, or that is will suddenly come on flashing even though the DPF has been regenerating. And a lot of us check out oils every week as it says in the handbook. When i asked Mazda UK about checking oil levels, i mentoned so if in one week i were to do 1,500 miles which is surley possible how often would i have to pull over onto the hard shoulder to check my oil levels... they could not give me an answer.
