  • Ford Mondeo 1 (1993 - 1996) - 96 1.8 turbo or head gasket blown? 25 Sep 2009 (Forum)
My Mark 1 diesel 1.8 Mondeo died on the road the other day. The power started dropping off as I was driving. Foot to the floor I was changing down the gears but there was nothing there. I noticed white smoke pouring out the back. I managed to get it off the road and as I turned into the junction the engine died altogether and the oil and batt light came on.
  • Servicing my car 15 Dec 2004 (Forum)
I was going to do the same again next time but wondered just what it was that needed doing, apparently the next service is £120 - other than nice new oil, is there really any point paying £120 on a car which, lets face it, is going to be pretty much worthless by the time I've finished with it? Is the Ford main dealer service history worth keeping? I can't help thinking I'm just paying for nothing really and i'd be better off just changing the oil every 5k miles - coolant etc is the Ford 'long life' stuff that apparently never needs changing, it had new plugs at the last service, etc etc.
  • Piston Rings - VAG 2.0 petrol engine 28 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Given that they want the car for three days I'm thankful for the warranty! Does the car need 'running in' after new piston rings? Should the oil be changed before the next scheduled change in 10k miles? Have we just been unlucky with our engine or has anybody else had VAG cough up for new piston rings? Many thanks
  • Bin Lumbered - Persistant Polo Probs 13 Dec 2001 (Forum)
I have had it in to be looked at numerous times and most of the main culprits have been ruled out. The carb has been reconditioned and seems ok. new carb gasket, fuel filter changed, plugs changed, leads checked, idle up, idle down, advanced, retarded. I am almost at a total loss and have used up too many favours with my local friendly mechanic. I checked the oil cap tonight atfer more complaints and found evidence of mayonaisse.
  • Renault Modus - Service tips 16 Feb 2024 (Forum)
I want to change the oil&filter and air filter on our 1.4 petrol Modus. There is no Haynes manual for this car, so I was wondering whether the engine is similar/same as another Renault model? The plugs for this model are v. expensive - any ideas on how long I can leave them in for?

  • 2008 Ford 1.25L Petrol Fiesta - Replacement catalytic converter 16 Apr 2019 (Forum)
Hi guys I'm just doing a routine oil change on my in laws car and noticed that one end of the cat is loose and looks like it's been leaking.   I take it this now needs replacing and if so, is this a DIY on your driveway job or a complete nightmare to replace?

  • Holiday weekend. What doing, or going with the car 19 May 2009 (Forum)
An oil change perhaps? Maybe you`re going on a motoring holiday? What`s in store for your car then? A shock for it perhaps? washing last winters salt of the nether regions.. What salt? ;-) Tell us about it, in a lighthearted way that lifts the human thingy, above all nastiness - which may or may not be elsewhere - but not here.

hi, just wondering what, or which type of engine flush i should use, i want to do an oil/filter change and as i got some hydraulic tappet sounds in my mk4 golf ( 1400cc ) im told this would do the trick to quiet them down abit, but with so many on the shelf is there a recomended flush or are they simply all the same?
  • XU 1.9 - Compression & Stem seals ?? 17 Aug 2006 (Forum)
My friends Peugeot XU 1.9 petrol engine is oil smoking from start-up at tickover or fast tickover speeds, hot or cold. 1) What should the Compressions be when doing a compression test. 2) Can the Valve stem seals be changed in situ, without removing the Cylinder head.
  • running in diesel engine 7 Sep 2005 (Forum)
The converse is what problems would the engine be likely to have if it was over revved during the run in period I am looking at a renault diesel one year old with about 8,000 miles on the clock. If the enggine has had a hard life early on does changing the oil to fully synthetic make and diffs Thanks alan
  • Petrol or Diesel 7 Sep 2005 (Forum)
The diesel was about £1000 more, on fuel economy this would pay back at around 40,000 miles by my reckoning. However is it still true that the diesels can be harder to start and need much more frequent oil changes ? What are the other advantages / disadvantages of the two fuels ?
  • Deep joy: no fight with a filter 22 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Changed the oil in the Capri today. The filter I put on hand-tight a year ago came off easily with no need for a wrench. Is this a first? It hadn't leaked a drop either. I used Duckhams as first refill after the car's 13 years of dormancy.

  • Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe - Service & MOT costs 19 Jan 2017 (Forum)
Hello, I have two questions: 1. I have been quoted £660 for a MB dealer "main" service to include brake fluid change and oil, air and fuel filters change. (diesel 2.0 litre) Their MOT price is £35. One advantage is that you get Merc roadside recovery with the service for one year. Local Merc specialist (ex merc trained owners) is £260 inclusive.
  • Ford Mondeo, 1.8L Estate 2003 - Car Radio Display 21 Apr 2016 (Forum)
The car itself appears to be running fine other than that (and a slight fluttering when the car first starts up from what sounds like near the offside front tyre/steering wheel). Oh and the oil needs topping up.  Any help or suggestions?  The car has done 165000 miles, with a forced engine change at 90000 miles (inlet manifold and clutch changed at the same time too).
  • Ford Focus - Rough idle on petrol focus 18 Mar 2012 (Forum)
There are no engine warning lights that light up. Further info: Checked air filter and it is moderately clean. Oil change is not due. Battery is showing as 12.6v on the multi-meter before starting up car so that and the alternator is fine. Spark plugs changed recently. Spark plug leads and coil pack appear in good condition but I wouldn't know how to check them.
