  • Vauxhall Corsa B (1993 - 2000) - 1994 1.4 Loss of power/sports mode light on M Reg 18 Dec 2009 (Forum)
The computer came up with error code 35, no idle speed control. I have now had the following parts replaced by 2 seperate garages: Idle Control Valve Oil seal replaced Spark plugs changed Oil and oil filter changed (twice!) Radiator fan switch replaced (twice!) Cylinder head gasket replaced (although I was only given an invoice for £5.28 for the part so not sure what work they actually did!)
  • Audi A2 - Tappety Engine Noise Please Help! 19 Jul 2013 (Forum)
The problem is that I took it to a number of independant garages but all came back with different diagnosis which is causing me a major problem as I do not know who to turn to and I do not want to end up with the same problem after paying for the work. 1. First one said the tappets need changing aswell as the camshaft 2. Second one stated the tappets only need a clean and an oil change 3. Third one said it needs a flush and oil change 4. Fourth one said the bottom end is gone so uneconomical for repair 5.
  • Ford Focus 2006 (Mk2) LX 1.6 Petrol - Rattling, Powertrain light and won't start. 6 Mar 2019 (Forum)
Hi, I have a Ford Focus 2006 (Mk2) LX 1.6 Petrol. I've had it 8 years and it's done 90k miles. I have the oil changed every year (every 10k miles) but never bothered with the other serviceable items (air filter, spark plugs, etc..). The oil was last changed March '18. Two weeks after that oil change I started my car to return home after a long day out.
  • VW Golf Mk5 - Gunk in the expansion tank 27 Nov 2012 (Forum)
First thing I thought of was the head gasket, however, engine temp climbs to the standard 90degC and stays there.  Plus there's no oil film in the coolant, or white gunk in the oil (on the dipstick or filler cap, plus did an oil change yesterday and the oil appeared uncotaminated).  I also couldn't see any signs of dried coolant on the plastic engine tray, either, so ruling out rad leaks etc?
  • PPeugeot 306 Turbo Diesel - Fumes in cabin urgent help needed 12 Oct 2010 (Forum)
No excessive smoke or drips out of the exhaust when driving. Recently I have had the air filter and oil filter changed. I am getting the whole exhaust replaced as the end of the tail pipe has corroded and there is not a proper exhaust exit and I think this could be the cause of fumes coming into the cabin.
  • Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - 01 2.8 Exhaust white smoke after 2 months left sta 25 Oct 2009 (Forum)
Should I change the oil and see if that fixes it? (cheaper than a head gasket!). By the way, the engine oil looks clear, it's only on the oil cap there is the white stuff. The engine temperature needle stayed right in the middle where it should be.
  • Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - Aftermath of Cam Belt etc. Change 14 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Seems that there are more things than water pumps to worry about on this engine. Also got an advisory to change the EGR valve at £189 all in. It is dribbling oil. Why?
  • Jaguar X-Type 2.0d SE - X type update 28 Feb 2018 (Forum)
The service and MOT cost £190 inc. VAT (he uses Forte flush and diesel clean) and interim oil and filter changes are about £50. I bought the car, more or less sight unseen, for £2,700 five years ago at 132,000 miles. It has been, I think, one of my better purchases. I hope to run it it to 200,000 - if only to watch the odometer change.
  • Vauxhall asta 1.6 16 valve 2004 - Vauxhall astra engine problem 3 Nov 2012 (Forum)
I am new here and heard through friends that this is the best place for advice. My car has been eating oil like mad for a while. Started to loose power and stayed in high revs before changing gears(automatic). Had the cat change and fitted a new egr valve. But problem is still there. Started to blow white smoke realy bad when reving engin or pulling away.
  • omega gearbox bizare problem 23 May 2005 (Forum)
There is a pipe hanging down from the box that looks like a vacuum pipe but vauxhall say its a breather . I had the oil changed at vauxhall but i know they can only change around 40% no difference if not worse. I just dont understand how it goes from perfect to crap just because of temperature even thought it has a oil cooler in the radiator.
  • Vauxhall Astra G Petrol (1998 - 2004) - 2002 1.6 16v Ticking noise, EML, poor starting etc 10 Jun 2008 (Forum)
evening folks, a friend asked me to have a look at his '02 plate astra 1.6 16v (Z16XE engine i believe) done 60k, as he said it was making a ticking noise. after looking at it and speaking to him ive ascertained the following, it had no oil in it (not registering on dipstick) may have been this way for awhile, once putting a few litres of oil in it is significantly quieter although still tappety in my opinion, i told him to check oil when stone cold in the morning as it may well need some more and i suspect it may quieten down some more once the oil has had chance to get back around the system and into the tappets, really hoping he hasn't damaged it seriously, there are no bottom end knocking noises but it could need new tappets.
  • Citroen Berlingo 1.6 hdi 2008 diesel engine - Diesel leaking from injector top 14 Mar 2016 (Forum)
Hi, I noticed that there is a diesel (disesl and oil) leak from where the injectors sit on the bore top, all inectors and injector seals were changed. After being changed, every thing went well with three injectors with completely dry surrounding, but the problen continued with injector No 2 which was replaced again by a good functioning one which was inspected by a specialist technician before fitting it in place, the proble went on with the leak from the same injector!
  • Nissan Micra K11 - MoT emissions failure 12 May 2012 (Forum)
But this is usually cured by an oil change...is it worth trying this + a retest? 2) I thought timing chains would last the lifetime of the car?
  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 1996 1.3 Has my sump being over filled? 30 Oct 2008 (Forum)
I have noticed my car has been quite smokey since the oil change. This morning I decided to investigate, I checked the breathers and they are all clear, so I decided to check the level, it was about 50mm above maximum. Is this within the save limits? If not I have done about 10 miles since the change would this have caused any damage to the seals?
  • Skoda Fabia - Fuel leaking into the Sump tank 10 Jan 2019 (Forum)
Has anyone heard of this? Is it too much off a coincidence or happened within a month of the water pump and cambelt being changed? Just after some honest advice, thank you
  • MAZDA CX3 - SERVICE PLANS-PROS AND CONS 17 Jul 2018 (Forum)
I have a confident and cheaper local independent, but doubt whether he has access to all the Mazda gadgetry(s) BUT -assuming the three years of servicing  will mainly  involve just checks, top ups and an oil change-perhaps it's better to just "pay as I go" ?   In fact I have a sneeky feeling the deal might not even include the oil change( anyone know?), hence my obvious question--what's included/what's not?
  • Vauxhall Zafira B - Vauxhall Zafira co2 emissions fail 1 Sep 2017 (Forum)
I recently put it in for it's MOT and it's failed on two minor things and then co2 emissions. I tried additive and a good thrashing and put it for retest it still failed. So I tried an oil change and new oil filter gave it a run again and it still failed. Put it for diagnostics which the garage said came back clear so they were sure it was the cat. So i had a new cat put in and downpipe at the garages recommendation but had my brother in law do it independently who is a qualified mechanic.
  • Vauxhall Astravan 2003, 1.7 dti envoy - Struggling to start 8 Aug 2013 (Forum)
The battery is sound, the starter motor seems to be sound, Ive recently serviced the car changing oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter etc. Any ideas what else it could be? I don't want to throw good money after bad, its already cost me nearly a grand and Im thinking i might as well put any more money to another motor thanks Lee
  • Ford Fiesta Encore 1998, (1.3 petrol Endura-E) - 1998 Fiesta 1.3 fails MOT on emissions 29 Mar 2011 (Forum)
My 1998 Fiesta (1.3 Endura-E) has just failed its MOT on emissions: Fast idle test: CO 0.65% (too high, fail), Lamdba 1.038 (too high, fail), HC 105ppm (pass) Natural idle test: CO: 0.5% (pass) The engine was nice and warm during the test, and I believe the tester wanted it to pass. Things I did before the test: New air filter, oil change and new oil filter, checked valve clearances, cleaned muck from inside rocker cover, checked exhaust system for leaks, ran car at high revs for a couple of miles. The cat (around £250 on this model) was replaced 11 months ago.
  • Ford Fiesta 1.4 TDCi - White/grey smoke on startup or after idling 15 Mar 2011 (Forum)
Also the fuel economy is poor, I'm only getting 30-35 MPG. The Ford dealer has inspected the injectors, changed the leak off pipes and injector seals and changed the oil and filter. I then went to a diesel specialist who pulled off various pipes and breathers and ran the engine with the turbo disconnected and still the plumes of smoke, his comments were possibly petrol in the tank and that the engine was 'breathing heavy'.
