• Ford Fiesta St '56 - Stiff Gears when Warm 7 Nov 2013 (Forum)
    The gears get extremely stiff when its been running for around 30 minutes. I've had the gearbox oil change, which hasn't helped. Garage is recommending changing the gear cables (?), but aren't sure that this will fix the problem.   Any ideas? I am a complete novice when it comes to cars, but don't want to keep trying things (and spending money), until I know what the cause of the problem is.

  Returns 35mpg on mix of town and open roads so thinking it should not be a serious fault. Air filter looks fairly new and oil recently changed Thanks in advance for your help

  Also the fuel consumption seems worse according to the computer (which was reset following service). It seems to be a little high on oil , could that do it ? I have only done very short runs since the belt change .

  Just bought new shape 2005 3 series with 8800 miles, genuine. Will be coming up to first service, after 2 years. Dashboard computer states oil change needed now (May2005 or 14,000 miles), along with air microfilter. however also has a sign stating front brake pads at 9000 miles. Does this mean check them now or change them. There is no way it can need brake bads, discs and pads visible through wheels are like new.

  Neighbour has a Vx Combo Van (basically a diesel corsa). The sump pan has rusted to an extent that oil is weeping out through the pan walls. A new pan is £142+vat from Vx. Apparently this is a common problem. I can get a pattern sump off ebay for about £60. What I would like to know is whether any BackRoomers have had any experience of changing these sumps.

  I should like to change the gearbox oil which I suspect has never been changed; the car is difficult to get into reverse, esp when cold, might this help? I know the engine is a 1.9 Renault, the drain plug appears to be at the bottom of the diff (square drive socket) and the filler appears to be a nylon or plastic plug facing front halfway up the gearbox.

  I'm not sure about this because an internet search suggests there are various ways to test an injector. They say that no more oil is leaking, that any excess oil on the car's undercarriage would be old oil that was washed out of the engine during the service oil change and took time to drip down from the engine. While it'll be hard to prove without the vehicle being independently inspected, is it likely that the garage is correct on all of the above points, and it is a very unfortunate coincidence, or is anything dodgy going on?

  They did their diagnostics and the fault code for ‘destruction of the timing belt’ was thrown up, which has resulted in them giving us a quote for nearly £3000, to which we both nearly died. Now, here is the interesting part, with us having to constantly top the oil up, we obviously consulted the manual and used Halfords car oil checker to which it said use 0w-30w grade oil, which we always have and always used the same manufacturer. On one occasion we were away from home late at night and our only option was to use 5w-30w instead, but it was the same manufacturer of oil.

  Just bought a 55 reg 94000 mile vehicle with all MOTs but a light history. Only intend keeping it for a few months until my new car is delivered. Apart from an oil and filter change, what should i get the garage to check or do?

  my 406 1.9 turbo diesel makes a rattling noise on start up, then dissapears when revved. it also makes this noise at low gears when engine is under load. the car has done 85,000 miles and i have changed oil and air filter recently.

  I have a 2001 1.9 dci megane diesel it is very underpowered and will only rev to 3000 rpm I have changed the mass air meter new filter, oil etc any help would be appreciated. thanks Jon typo and shouting amended.
• Vauxhall astra temperature problem 25 Jan 2005 (Forum)
  It flucates between the 90 mark and 80. This is more noticeable when driving around town. On the motorway the change is not as great. I have checked the coolant and I am not getting any oil in it and it does not seem to be losing any. It also never overheats. Any ideas. Thanks Crol

  My 96 827 has developed a tappet noise at start up.It seems to be just one tappet sounding off and it rapidly disappears if revved.I think I may have read something on this subject but can't locate where.Is it an idiosyncracy of this engine and something to live with? Car has done 60 thou with oil and filter changes every 3000 miles

  It is currently on about 20 clicks and is just starting to roll backwards now but I cam't find where to tighten the cable. I had it up on ramps yesterday to change the oil and couldn't see anything at the front end and its definatly not on the inside behind the handbrake itself

  By the time I'd driven it home the steering wheel was failing to self centre. Today I noticed the clutch was starting to slip and smell. I dipped the oil, to find the oil level was a good 10 mm over the fill mark and the air filter hadn't been changed. The oil also smelt (in my opinion) quite strongly of petrol. After taking it to get the wheel alignment checked I found out the alignment was way off.

  Hi For sometime I have had trouble with car loosing oil, a coule of weeks ago a mechanic changed my oil pressure switch, but when I gave it a run the red light came on. I took it back and he relaced it and the oil leak seems fixed. (dipstick fine etc) However the car still sufferes from 'vibration' in low gears, when it gets up speed it seems fine.

  I guess the best way to describe it would be like a static noise with a little tapping. Anyway, I thought I'd best check the oil and water before driving it again, as I haven't since buying the car, so I popped the bonnet. The oil has a couple of dark bits when I wipe it, so I'm guessing I might need an oil change? And on the top right there is a tank... it is below the minimum, so this could be the problem.

    Was out doing the normal weekly checks and there is a Light creamy film inside filler neck and creamy sludge on oil cap(Not lots)...None on dipstick... within the last month it has had full service( Oil change & oil filter,fuel filter,air filter pollen ect ect) new cambelt, new waterpump and new hydraulic tentioner.
